Applying to Genetic Counseling Graduate Programs

The Iowa Institute of Human Genetics is hosting an informational event on the Future of Personalized Genomic Medicine: Applying to Genetic Counseling Graduate Programs. During this event, a panel of genetic counselors from around the state will speak about their experience applying to genetic counseling training programs, their daily activities, as well as their role in personalized genomic medicine. This opportunity is a great way for students to discuss first-hand the application process, job growth and ask questions in a small group setting.

GDCB Recognition Luncheon

Thursday, April 26, 2018 - 12:00pm to 2:00pm

Students who have earned scholarships or internships from the Departments of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology or Genetics, Development, and Cell Biology or from the Genetics Program will be recognized.  Current peer mentors will also be acknowledged.

Genetics Club

Thursday, October 1, 2015 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm

Genetics Club will meet on Thursday, Oct 1st, at 7 pm in 116 MacKay Hall.  Food and beverages will be provided.

Wes Wierson, graduate student in the MCDB program with Dr. Jeff Essner, will present his research.

Dues for the semester of $10 will be collected.  Left over club T-shirts from last year will also be sold for $10.

Ice Cream Social

Sunday, August 23, 2015 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Incoming Genetics Freshmen are invited to meet their Learning Community peer mentors at the bus stop outside Kildee/Bessey Hall at 2:00 pm to take CyRide to the home of Lois and Jack Girton for an ice cream social to kick off the new school year.  Faculty advisors and officers of the Genetics Club will be there to meet students and welcome them to ISU Genetics.  Always a fun event!

Genetics Faculty Meeting and Luncheon

Tuesday, August 18, 2015 - 11:00am to 1:00pm

All faculty in the three Departments overseeing the Genetics Major are invited to attend an Annual Meeting to discuss the state of the major and changes proposed to its curriculum for the 2016-2017 catalog by the Genetics Major Committee.  The meeting will be held in 240 Bessey Hall.  Lunch will be included.  Faculty who currently advise or teach courses in the Genetics major are particularly encouraged to attend.

Careers in Human Genetics Day at the University of Iowa

The Iowa Institute of Human Genetics (IIHG) holds Careers in Human Genetics Information Days to expose students interested in learning more about career opportunities in genetics. This opportunity is a great way for students to discuss first hand different careers in genetics and ask questions in a small group setting. During the session, students may meet with a core lab director, bioinformatician, genetic counselor, research scientist, lab manager/lab compliance director, medical geneticist, and molecular geneticists. Peer Mentor Study Groups

Monday, January 26, 2015 - 12:00pm

Need help with your coursework? Come study with our peer mentors.

Study groups meet each week in 110 Bessey Hall.  Additional review sessions may be held before scheduled Chemistry 178 or Biology 212 exams.

  • Monday and Wednesday: noon - 1 pm and 2:10 - 3 pm
  • Tuesday and Thursday: 11 am to noon
