Student Spotlight
Hometown: Twin Cities, MN
Major: Genetics, Psychology
Why did you choose Iowa State University?
The campus was the perfect combination of small feel but resources of a big University. The Genetics program was also a big plus!
How did you become interested in your major?
My family began working with a genetic counselor and it showed me a path that blended my interests of helping people understand complex information and genetics.
What are your current goals following graduation?
I am taking a gap year (or two) before pursuing a masters in genetic counseling.
Campus Activities: I was a peer mentor for the genetics department, President of the Biological Sciences Club, and involved in many honor societies. They all helped me develop professional skills while meeting new people. Those skills and relationships have helped me develop my networking skills and build my resume.
What are a few things you love about your major and department?
I love how many people I know within my major and the learning team helped immensely with that. I also love how many opportunities there are for campus involvement in my major, specifically the number of clubs and activities.
How would you fill in the blank for high school students interested in your field?
“You’re going to love studying the sciences at Iowa State because ….”
The people here are passionate about helping you succeed in whatever path you take!
Do you have an example of how a professor or staff member has supported you at Iowa State?
Countless faculty members have helped me with letters of recommendation, career guidance, and overall life advice. Everyone is knowledgeable of different fields and they all want to see you succeed and are willing to help however they can!

My best advice for new students is to ask questions when you have them. You are never the only one wondering and getting an answer is always helpful. Asking questions is also a great way to meet professors which is an easy networking tool!
